Question - Has anyone any information about using steroids to treat macular degeneration? Has anyone had this done? Is it helpful? What are the side effects? My father has macular degeneration and a doctor told him to look into steroid treatments for the eye. I've never heard of it before and I check the AMDF Bulletin Board and Archives frequently. Please post a response here if you can help me. Many, many thanks from both me and my Dad. Bill Weston

Dear Bill,Steroids are very controversial, and are known to have possible side effects such as glaucoma and cataracts. I would strongly recommend against using them, particularly with any form of eye disease.
Here are two links for web sites that will give you the information that you seek.

Drugs and their side effects/warnings

Ocular Side Effects out of Oregon Health Sciences University
Some doctors will suggest using steroids for eye diseases, such as MD, but some people have had more vision loss after ingesting them.
Hope this helps, and please give my kindest regards to your father.
Best wishes,
