My mother has suffered from diabetes-related macular degeneration for 12 years. One of her greatest frustrations is her inability to see the ever-changing faces of her grandchildren. I have stumbled on a solution that works for her. I photographed my daughter after first coating her face with baby powder. I shot her with black and white film against a black background. I had enlargements made so that her face was approximately 3 inches across. The contrast between her white face and the dark features allowed my mother to make out her face--with the help of a magnifier and some strong viewing light.
