We have just found out that our granddaughter has Star-gardts disease. She is age 10 and her eye's went from 20-20 to 20-45 & 20-50. She has been diagnosed with Stargardt's. Where do we go from here? Is there any hope for future corrections?

My wife has Stargardts, as well as her brother. She is 32 years old, and was diagnosed when she was young, about 11 or 12 I think. About 6 years ago she returned to school to get her Office Management degree, and currently works at a community college in our town. We had a daughter 3 years ago, and she has a son from a previous marriage who is almost 13. The odds of having a child who will develop Stargardts when the mother or father already has it is miniscule, as BOTH parents must carry the gene. Neither of our children show any signs of the disease. My wife cannot drive, but she is capable of almost everything else. A CCTV unit from Telesensory Company or Equal will be required for reading, writing, etc. We have 1 in the home, and she has 1 at work. Do not despair, she is a great woman and I love her a lot, as do our children.

Is there any hope for future corrections? One place you can find more information about Stargardt's Disease (a/k/a Juvenile Macular Degeneration) is by going to the ARCHIVES on this web site. One of the many topic headings is called "Macular Degeneration and the Young." It will contain many posted messages about Stargardt's. You can get to the ARCHIVES from the AMDF Bulletin Board or from the AMDF HOME Page. Just click on the Archives button link. Note that Marla Runyan has had Stargardt's Disease since childhood and yet she will represent the US at the Olympics in Sydney, Australia next month. So don't give up hope, even if the diagnosis is Stargardt's. Best wishes to you all. Bob Miller

Hi, I was really impressed with this site. My husband has Juvenile MD. He was diagnosed in 1984. Since then his eyesight has gradually worsened. I am really interested in the surgery with the relocation of the retina but, The question is; How long will this last? Is the eye cured of an incurable disease? No one actually talked about what one should or could expect. If you have more info please let me know.

to Mavis Miller: no,this won't cure the disease. it just moves the macula around so that the fovea is in a better place. doesn't stop the progression of the disease, though.

Hey everyone. I was wondering if any of those who have Stargardts has ever gotten bitten by an animal or anything has ever happened to one of their hands (deep cut, burn, etc.). My sister got this disease shortly after she was bitten by a cat and I am trying to find a link with other people. Please e-mail me at jennifer_morris@hotmail.com with the subject "Stargardts". Thank you.
