Hi I am eighteen and have had vision problems my entire life. My eye doctor assumes that I have a form of juvenile MD because there is a spot on my retina and my mother and eldest brother both have the disease. My question is, is there some way that they can test to see what my specific problem is? My vision is not that bad it is 20/70 and 20/80 and although it is uncorrectable I consider myself lucky becuse my brother and mother have vision above 20/400. You should have an eye doctor perform several tests on your eyes to see if you have Stargardt's Disease, which is also known as juvenile macular degeneration. From the HOME page on this web site, go to the button marked "Macular Degeneration." It will provide an excellent overview of the two types of macular degeneration. One link from Macular Degeneration is entitled "Examinations." It will inform you about the types of eye exams you should request from your eye doctor. The sooner you have a thorough eye exam by an eye care professional, the better. You can find a list of Eye Care Centers across the United States on this web site. From the HOME page, go to the heading marked "Eye Care Centers." Then go to any state listed. Almost every state has some listings. Names, addresses and phone numbers are all helpfully listed alphabetically by state. Good luck to you and I would suggest that you call for an appointment today. Your friend, Jason.
